Dimmable but more Powerful than the Sun
Trying to put things into perspective is not often as easy as it is in making a case for these state of the art, new generation LEDs. What is one trying to accomplish when using lights to propagate plants? The simple answer is to, as closely as possible, mimic that great big ball of fire in the sky, the sun. That said depending on, where you are on this spinning ball called earth, the time of day, the season, your elevation, the climatic conditions and excluding the extremities of earth. The sun delivers anywhere from 900 μMol/m2/s to 2000 μMol/m2/s at midday on a clear day at the equator.
A little technical jargon, μMol/m2/s (micromoles/square meter/second) is the measure of PAR (Photosynthetic Active Radiation) The Sun’s PAR arrives here on earth as visible light within the 400-700 nanometers wavelength. It is the range of light wavelengths that plants use to photosynthesize. We measure it as PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) PPFD is the quantity of PAR light (Photons) that fall on a m2 of the plant in 1 second.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way lets simplify things a little. Let’s consider our 2000μMol/m2/s at the equator. Lets assume, that a likely mean in Mediterranean climates (30deg latitude) is 1500μMol/m2/s at midday on clear day. The average number of day light hours here in South Africa is roughly 12Hrs/day, which would equate to 4383 Daylight hours/year. Trouble is the weather is not always perfect, the sun is not directly overhead all day long, it hides away once a day, and is closer or farther away depending on the season. Using our simplification though, lets first assume that the weather is always clear and that there are no seasons. However, just before sunrise the sun is emitting 0 μMol/m2/s, as it is just after sunset. From this it follows that the average μMol/m2/s on any given day is 750μMol/m2/s/12Hrs.
If then as in our perfect weather scenario you had 4383 daylight hours in a year at an average of 750μMol/m2/s your plants would have received a total of 3.28725 Mol/m2/s from the sun, it’s a huge number of photons.
